Mineral Supplementation on Pasture
I have redesigned my mineral buffet 3 times. Each time making it easier to pull but also more robust. I have accomplished this with heavier wood skis, quarry belt as this lid, removable tubs for cleaning and optimal location and length of the pulling chain. My buffet style feeder holds, white salt, Sulphur, dolomitic limestone, limestone, and cooper sulphate. As my heard as grown so has their consumption. I have added a 3 compartment mineral feeder, this allows 40lbs in each section. I add the most demanding minerals; Redman salt, full spectrum mineral mix and kelp meal.
The idea is that our cattle have not lost their nutritional wisdom, soils are lacking in minerals so we must allow our cattle to supplement. As livestock become mineral balanced so to will their manure, thus improving soil health and vigor. Their intake of each mineral ebbs and flows with the season and feed quality. Meaning they intake needed minerals and certain times.
